I received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Converse College where I also did graduate studies. While at Converse, I performed with the Spartanburg Symphony and played clarinet in both the symphony and the Spartanburg Wind Ensemble. I completed my education degree and am  certified in K-12 Instrumental Music and K-12 General/Choral Music. After teaching middle school chorus and band for three years in Horry County, I returned to Charleston and served as the Associate in Music and Education for Children and Youth at John Wesley United Methodist Church for nine years. I  returned to the classroom in 1993 and have been a teacher in Charleston County for the past 24 years teaching high school and middle school choral music and piano. This will be my seventeenth year at School of the Arts.

I have served as the church organist at Epworth United Methodist Church since 2004 and have accompanied for various groups throughout the state for many years. I am a member of several professional music organizations: MENC, MTNA, Delta Omicron, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

I am a native of Charleston. I began my formal musical training at the age of seven and have continued to make music an important part of my life. I am married to Allen Benson, who is also a music teacher in Charleston County. We have two grown children, Laura and Christopher, both graduates of SOA as well as two spoiled dogs, Coco and Eli.
